Army Captain Brian “Bubba” M. Bunting was a star athlete at the Bullis School and a 2002 West Point graduate. He was deployed to Afghanistan in June 2008, and returned home for a two-week visit with family and friends in January 2009. He was only back in Afghanistan for four days when he was killed by a roadside bomb on February 24, 2009.
Bubba married his wife, Nicki, on September 23, 2006. They started their race toward a big family on their honeymoon, and their son, Connor, was born on July 2, 2007. Just four days after Nicki received the notification that Bubba was killed, she found out that their second child was conceived while he was home during his two-week R&R. Bubba and Nicki’s second son, Cooper, was welcomed on October 29, 2009.
Bubba’s Belly Run is in honor and memory of Captain Brian "Bubba" Bunting’s race to grow his family. Each year, the race will be held the weekend of Nicki and Bubba’s wedding anniversary, when his original race began.
